Countdown to Infinite Crisis (80-page special)

**Note: Major spoilers below.

See, with all the excitement going on about DC's current mega-series "Countdown to Final Crisis", I thought it would be fun to take a look at a few of the gems that came right before.

Before Countdown to Final Crisis, there was the Infinite Crisis. And along with the Infinite Crisis came a lot of little one-shots, mini-series, and side-stories, one of which is the subject of today's entry.

Countdown to Infinite Crisis is a one-shot, 80-page special featuring the Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) as its unlikely star. Kord, who is about as second-string as one can get in the marvelous (har har) DC Universe, has always had a special place in my heart (right next to the lovely Michael Carter, a.k.a. Booster Gold).

Writers Johns, Rucka, and Winick clearly deserve a standing ovation for this one, as it features some of the best, most heartfelt character introspection that has ever graced the pages of DC Comics. And yes, I will say that this more than stands up against all of the Miller-esque, brooding, Batman inner-thought bubbles ever written.

By now, anyone who has ever picked up a recent DC comic will know that Ted Kord is killed by Maxwell Lord at the end of this special. Indeed, one of the Big Three says it every five minutes, so it's not even much of a surprise if you're reading backwards. Allow me to share, however, one of the most brilliant pieces of writing ever put into a comics page:

"My name is Ted Kord.

I am the second man to call himself the Blue Beetle.

I tell myself there will be a third."

He thinks this on the second-to-the-last page of the book, right before Maxwell Lord shoots him in the head. Ouch.

Of course, by now Booster Gold has managed to travel back in time and rescue Ted from certain death (Booster Gold #6), so my gut-wrenching pain over Ted's death is somewhat moot. Still, it's one of the finer moments in DC history, and I can definitely say that it's up there with rival company's Captain America #25.

Make mine Marvel? Nah. Still rolling with DC. ;)

Comments

Don't count Ted back in the game just yet. I'm pretty sure we're gonna be in for a few ripple effects in the next few issues. Though I'm REALLY hoping they can pull Ted back in even if he isn't a Blue Beetle anymore. It's just tough to beat the Blue and Gold team. The only thing better than that is when you add a prissy Guy Gardner. =D

Oh, and if you like Ted I hope you're reading current issues of the new Blue Beetle as Jaime is -kind of- trying to follow in his steps a bit.

I should probably mention that I found your journal(s) through Jamie ([info]hinoai). I check the journals from other folks who post on her journal from time to time. Dunno why, just do. I saw you make a few comments on comics a bit ago which was interesting, then you did the Torchwood stuff (just got my 1st season DVDs) and now I see you actually appreciate (and get?) Beetle and Booster. Had to say something.

Please feel free to verify my sanity (or lack of) with Jamie.
Haha, no worries. :) This is a public journal, so I don't mind folks dropping by.

And I will /weep/ if they kill Ted again. :( I don't really follow the new BB, as I'm primarily a Booster Gold fan and, in turn, like Beetle because of their friendship.

And Guy Gardner? Is made of awesome. XD
Are you reading the GLC then? I'm a Rayner fan most (as I identify with him) but I've been a GL (concept) fan since I was a kid. I've got the collectibles to prove it. Did I mention I'm a comic geek? Heh.

Oh, and if you enjoy/ed the Crisis stuff at all PLEASE tell me you read the Sinestro Corps stuff. I'm sorry but that thing put all current Crisis stuff to shame. And looking at what Johns has planned in the future for the GLC...wow.
...and I apologize for the double post. My browser showed the first one didn't go through.

Apparently posting is more difficult than I'm capable of. Ugh.
It's all right! I deleted the redundant one, so no harm done. ;) Welcome to my IJ.
